A ROSE & A THORN

Sarah

 

Rose

Her two dogs, Gypsy and Magik. They are bundles of joy and happiness. The unconditional love that comes from animals saves her life.


Thorn

Self-criticism and self-doubt. She wants to live the best life she can, but with social media and constant comparisons, it makes it hard to stay positive.

Evan 

Rose

His roses! Overnight his roses grew everywhere. These are lives that he's contributing to, and they're paying him back with such beauty.


Thorn

Squirrels. They eat all of his fruit before he can pick it off the trees. He would never hurt the squirrels, but he has to accept that there's nothing he can do about the squirrels.

John

Rose

That he does what he loves for a living being able to write music. Unless he's creating something, he gets anxious and stuck in his head and he doesn't feel like he's really living life. 


Thorn

Comparing and negativity. Compare and despair. It's not like there's a competition.

Sarah

 

Rose

Is it her Liza Minnelli earrings? Is it Johnny's Cher T-shirt? It's actually a Buddha head plant pot from Green Thumb.

Thorn

She was supposed to have THE single on an artist's album for months and found out today that it was no longer the single.

Evan 

Rose

His dog, Muddy Waters. The easiest way to get out of your head and be of service is to take care of his dog.


Thorn

Himself. Constantly his own worst enemy, and the voice in his head is a huge downer. Fight back!

Johnny 

Rose

Double rose! New car and quitting smoking. His car is a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The smooth ride, the sound, the cleanness... music sounds better, he doesn't mind traffic, and it's so nice and fresh. And it's helping him quit smoking because he doesn't want to smoke in his new car!


Thorn

Smoking cigarettes. His rose is fighting off thorns!

Sarah

 

Rose

Painting (Again). She bought some canvases and started painting again for the first the time in years. She saw herself painting in a vision at the Hoffman Institute and felt it was calling to her. Plus she wanted to create a second creative outlet unrelated to her professional life.

 

Thorn

Her obsessive mind at the moment. It’s the mindframe of obsessing and intrusive thought that distract her from the things that she really wants to do instead of just staying positive and focused. She can recognize the pattern now, but she needs to take the steps to move through it.

Evan

Rose

His daily routine. He went off his daily routine recently for a month, and it really threw him off. The minute he started going back into it, it was like medicine all over his soul.

Thorn

Procrastination. He’s been having a problem prioritizing the creative things in his life that make him happy. He keeps prioritizing obligations which come easier, but he really wants to figure out how to overcome that.

Mia

Rose

2019. It’s a universal feeling of renewal, of rebirth, of new energy and new life. It’s out with the old. With 2019, she feels like there’s been a release of pressure and fear that have been building, almost like we’re entering a new turn in the moon.

 

Thorn

Freedom. She is always someone who lives passionately day by day and embraces her freedoms and independent spirit. But, she’s realized that she's had too much freedom and not enough structure in her life. One of her goals is to learn what structure looks like.

Sarah

 

Rose

Her meditation practice. Sarah has suffered from anxiety throughout her life and has found meditation to be the best way for her to ease it and calm her mind. She meditates every morning after turning off her phone to get rid of distractions. 

 

Thorn

A literal pain in her neck. Sarah tweaked her neck a few months ago and despite trying several different treatments, the pain continues to get worse. She spent time over her holiday break seeking treatment from various professionals but is still working to find a solution.

Evan

Rose

Being able to take time off of work to recharge. Evan took time off for the holidays and it left him feeling refreshed and reenergized. He spent his break cleaning out his home to make donations to those less fortunate and took time to take perspective on his life.

Thorn

His fear of public speaking. Although he's had many successful public speaking engagements in the past, he still wishes he had more confidence in it. The fear will keep him awake the night before a public speaking event, and he's still trying to find a way to overcome his fear. 

Harvey

Rose

He has a bouquet of roses in his life. He's grateful for his amazing children and his family, for his career in music, and to be truly living out his dreams every day. He's also very grateful for his health and his fitness.

 

Thorn

That there are people living in our country who are not having their basic needs met. He wishes everyone could be happy and healthy and able to care for and provide for themselves. 

Sarah

 

Rose

Her husband, LSDream. He lets Sarah just be her kooky self and can tell him anything. He’s accepting and understanding and she really loves when he’s not on tour and they can spend time together at home.

 

Thorn

Sarah has a double thorn - the surface is her husband being gone for two months. But underneath are her abandonment issues. She likes being alone, but sometimes if she’s alone for too long she feels neglect and abandonment from her childhood.

Evan

Rose

His birthday and all of the joy he received from the festivities with family and friends. On this birthday he had a massage, saw a movie, played video games and had a sushi dinner at Nozawa Bar, then on the weekend had a Harry Potter themed brunch at home followed by the scavenger hunt at the Getty with Watson Adventures.

Thorn

His fear of rejection. He can overcome and move on from it quickly, but it stops him from taking chances because he’s concerned about people saying no. He wishes he could go to the roots of that and pull out the weed of self doubt.

Jesse

Rose

His friendship with Muriel. Muriel is a 98-year-old woman Jesse met on the street that he befriended and still talks to every day. Muriel is genealogist and writer and she hand-knit Jesse a beret.

 

Thorn

The envy he feels when he sees other people easily getting the things he works really hard for. It’s part of the process of being a creative and he’s grateful for the process, but he does see certain things and wishes he had them too.

Rose

Disneyland on Halloween! Sarah has never been for Halloween, and she's finally going this year.

Thorn

Ocean pollution. She was at an underwater-themed party over the weekend, and the entryway to the party was an art exhibit on pollution in the ocean. The ocean is such a rose for Sarah, and her heart breaks for these creatures whose homes are no longer thriving. 

Evan

Rose

The mind and the body. Evan was recently in a car accident and broke a bone in his back. 2 weeks later he was moving around when he thought he'd be out for the rest of the year! It blows his mind how the human body heals itself.


Thorn

Kitty, Evan's foster kitten through the ASPCA, was sick over the weekend. They ultimately had to take her to the vet, and the ASPCA connected them with someone amazing. Shout out ASPCA!

MNDR 

Rose

Making music. She's coming to the end stages of putting together her next album, where she's through the fog and feeling great about the music!


Thorn

Apathy towards homelessness. It's such a problem in LA, so she decided that on weekends whenever she has free time, she's going to make a bunch of food and give it to the homeless people in her neighborhood. These are problems that are right in front of you and these people are not invisible.

Sarah

 

Rose

Health. Always had anxiety and health anxiety. She had a stye on her eyelid and freaked out. Her rose is the stye because it's not something worse. It's a rose on her eye.


Thorn

Her period cramps. It's healthy and it's wonderful but it's so painful sometimes. ...or is her thorn Harry Potter?

Evan 

Rose

Health/raw veganism. Lost almost 35 lbs since May and is now off his blood pressure medication. His body is correcting itself.


Thorn

Resentments. As much as he tries to let go, these resentments just come back. Try to write a letter.

LSDREAM

Rose

The Journey. So many things are out of our control, but what is in our control is how we react to the ups, downs, and challenges along the way.


Thorn

Frustration with technology, especially while trying to create. Can you sage it away and sage in a new one? A hideous thorn.

Just being alive. Life, breathing, being present. She loves life and being alive, and in moments of stress or negativity can distract from how fragile life is.

Feeling so alive after his Pilates class. He hasn't been able to exercise since his accident about a year ago, but was recently cleared by doctors to do Pilates. It felt good to give that gift to his body.

Floral arranging as a therapeutic tool. One of her friends is in recovery after an aneurism, and although they lost a lot of function, Julie was able to bring them flowers to arrange and they were able to handle it.

Pop Metal and the epic Marilyn Manson. She's newer to exploring the Metal Music scene but she's really been feeling it lately and wants to explore more.

Feeling obsessive about always wanting to do more. She always feels like she needs to be doing something more to the point where it will ruin her day.

Evan 

Rose

Halloween. He's obsessed with Halloween and feels like October is his playground!

 
 

Thorn

Not being able to say No to projects and taking on too much, leaving him overwhelmed. It's difficult because it's all stuff he genuinely wants to do, but sometimes the overload suffocates his creativity.

Making music and being able to do what she loves as a career. She has so much gratitude for music and for her fans!

Thorn

The self-doubt she feels. Everytime before she releases a project, she gets in her head, worried about how the reception will og.

EPISODE TEN

Rose

Her Aunt Hilda. She's her dad's cousin but also her aunt. Hilda is one of the good eggs on her dad's side -- she's so fierce, funny, and fabulous! Sarah's rose is having an amazing blood-relative.

Thorn

Her front porch and the relating OCD. There is paint peeling on the porch and it drives her crazy. It's the first thing she sees when she leaves the house, and it's not the best way to start her day. (#PaintThePorch)

Evan

Rose

Having real friends. This is something peopel take for granted. Being able to talk to people about anything and not feeling judged and also trusting their opinion. Having a real core friend-base when you need to vent and bounce stuff off somebody. Someone you don't pay to do it but will tell you what's up.


Thorn

Jet lag. He just got back from Europe and has messed up sleeping patterns which has messed up his routine and his balance in life. While he is grateful to have experienced what he did in Europe, the jet lag is throwing everything off. Keep trying to remind himself to go easy on himself. It's okay to not do your routine for a week!

JHart 

Rose

His dog Jackson. He's a little black terrier/chihuahua/dachshund.


Thorn

Doubt. This year was the first year he didn't feel like he continued on his expected path. Doing something different is scary, and he contined to doubt himself but is trying to tell the doubt to take a backseat.

EPISODE ELEVEN

Sarah

 

Rose

Egypt. She just got back from a trip there that was unbelievable. She didn’t know what to expect but being able to experience the pyramids and tombs and all the things she’s seen in books her whole life. She feels like it put everything into perspective to be taken out of her bubble and experience something so incredible and godly.

Thorn

Feeling sad after coming home from trips. She feels it now having experienced something outside of her world. She felt so inspired while she was on her trip, and then feels like she’s mourning that feeling of exploration and adventure now that she’s back to her normal life. She misses the pyramids, the people, the place, the whole experience. She feels melancholic every time she comes home from a trip like this.

Evan

Rose

Community. He spent the last week with a community of creatives brainstorming ideas of how to make the music and entertainment industry better for creatives to thrive in. Being united with such a larger community makes him appreciate that there are so many people with brilliant minds who are working to solve problems and coming up with amazing solutions.


Thorn

Not being able to pause and reflect before he responds. He’s been working on being less of a reactive person but it’s a constant struggle for him to take the time to think and respond appropriately.

Rose

Being able to do things like the podcast. He’s at a point in his life and his work where it doesn’t feel like labor all the time anymore. It can feel like fun. He loves being able to do things like be on RTTS and call it his work


Thorn

Having a lot of things that feel pressing socially. He’s finding it more difficult to assert himself in ways that don’t discount other people. He struggles with setting boundaries and finding middle ground between what he wants and what others in his life want, and changing things that go against how he’s lived his whole life.

EPISODE TWELVE

Rose

One of her best friends and former podcast guest, Johnny Wujek. They went to Egypt last month and they really reconnected. He’s so inspiring to her and she loves that they can get together and be creative together and let the inner child out.

 

Thorn

Cancel Culture. Social media is amazing and life changing and an amazing platform for so many things, but it’s also a platform for anyone’s opinion and mob mentality, and knocking people down. It’s so easy for people to spread hate and bullying. It makes her wonder where the compassion has gone and if we’ve lost the ability to understand that humans make mistakes and are still learning and growing.

Evan

Rose

Taking time to recharge. It’s easy to get caught up in working all the time, and taking time to experience family and friends and with the holidays coming up he’s looking forward to the break.

 

Thorn

Expectations. Having them and not being open to the universe creating what’s supposed to happen because he’s stuck in what he thinks should happen. He gets down when it doesn’t happen exactly the way he thought it would.

Time off for the holidays. She’s looking forward to having some days completely off and traveling Scandinavia to see the Northern lights.

 

Thorn

Being a female in the industry and having to balance standing up for yourself and being perceived as a “bitch”. She’s working on not feeling bad for sticking up for herself and knowing what she deserves.
